Over the past few weeks I have been making a point of taking advantage of the awesome late autumn weather by going for walks through the woods in my neighbourhood. This has been one of the best decisions I have ever made… REALLY!
The moment I walk into the woods feels like I am entering a portal into another very different world. I suspect not unlike how Superman may have felt upon entering his “Fortress of Solitude” for the very first time. It truly feels magical.
But the real magic is how I begin to reflect on the most important things in my life, my family, my business and everything impacting my life that very moment, almost subconsciously, upon entering my very own “Fortress of Solitude”.
Incredibly, many of the seemingly huge challenges, trials and tribulations I may be facing at any given time are simplified. They simply become pieces of a jig saw puzzle that is my life and not “the” jigsaw puzzle in and of themselves.
In effect, what the simple act of taking a 15-30 minute walk throught the woods enables me to do is to see the forest for the trees, both literally and figuratively.
In our world where we are bombarded with so much information quite literally every single minute of our lives, getting lost “in the weeds” is becoming a very real problem.
There is just so much data and information demanding our attention every which way we look that it is easy to lose sight of the “big picture” of our lives. Indeed, this is becoming a lost art form. This is very unfortunate since the alternatives are quite evident.
If you are feeling more and more stressed out or anxious about your life and the life of your family you know exactly what I am talking about here. If the paths to your career, health, family life, financial security and even your children’s future seem unclear and up in the air, then you definitely know exactly what I am talking about here.
You see, it is very easy to latch onto any one of the many challenges, trials and tribulations we face on a daily basis and blow these out of proportion into seemingly insurmountable obstacles or excuses for why we cannot achieve our goals or why we think that we “cannot” do anything to change the status quo. Your status quo, your life!
I have found that unless you take some “me time” for yourself on a daily basis to reflect on your life and to be grateful for the people and things most important to you in your life, then you are doing yourself a big disservice. You are letting the stress and anxiety rule and negatively affect your life.
So permit yourself the time each and every day, even if only 15-30 minues daily to reflect, to enable you to see the forest for the trees.
While you are at it, don’t be surprised if you find that those seeming insurmountable problems and challenges may not be as big or life changing as they initially may have seemed. Don’t be surprised if you get those “a-ha!” moments to challenges you may have been trying to find a solution for days or even years!
You may find greater focus and direction in your life. You may find that what you thought to be the most important “things” in your life may not really be as important as you origianally thought. You may also find that some things and people in your life you may have been taking for granted are really what bring the most meaning and importance to your life – they are more deserving of your attention than most anything else. You may find “the right path” to where you want to go and what you want to accomplish in your life. The list goes on and on.
So what are you waiting for? Go into the woods! Never lose the ability to see the forest for the trees each and every day.
You will be glad you did!
Until next time…
