Exactly 6 years ago I found myself blessed with my newborn daughter and at the height of my career with a 5 figure salary. And you know what? I felt absolutely miserable. At the time, I was working 16 hour days for a CEO who only cared about his profit, while his under appreciated and grossly under compensated employees of over 10 years were constantly being overworked and literally suffering heart attacks as a result.
I felt trapped. I would wake up every day with nothing to look forward other than another day at a job that I absolutely hated, just so I could continue to pay my bills. At the same time, I felt lucky to even have a job when so many of my peers were being laid off during the last financial crisis.
I was living to work, not working to live. Worse, I was letting my boss control my destiny. That is until I finally came to my “Aha!” moment, this quote by Jim Rohn.
“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”
I have since left my corporate life behind for good and have taken control of my life doing what I feel I was born to do. Doing what I love to do and feel extremely passionate about. And you know what? Unlike a job, no one can ever take that away from me ever again.
Gone are the days of working for one company for your entire career. Gone are the great pensions that were offered by many of these same companies.
Instead you are coming to the realization that your supposed full time job is really a temporary position with indefinite terms. Instead, you are finding that the company you are working for is asking you to do the job of two or more employees for the same or even lower pay.
Instead you are finding that the company you work for is more interested in its bottom line and your bosses are only interested in maximizing their bonuses at the expense of the company, shareholders and all their employees.
The stark reality is that your bosses have no problem with letting go long term employees who have given their sweat, blood and tears for many, many years just so they can further line their pockets even as they are running the company into the ground.
They are mainly thinking only of themselves. So what do you think they have planned for you? The stark reality is, not much.
Remember Gordon Gecko’s quote from the 1987 movie Wall Street? “The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good.”
The point is 30 years later things are getting much worse, not better.
Following the “common wisdom” advice of going to school, getting good grades for the sole purpose of getting a good paying job so that you can achieve your goals of financial freedom is a lie! I truly hope that the following clip from the movie “Up in the Air” provides you with a new perspective.
How Much Did They First Pay You to Give Up Your Dream?
I truly believe that it should be compulsory and played in every school, so that our own children do not make the same mistakes we have by buying into this hogwash. Hopefully, our children can avoid our self-imposed 25 year sentence and detour of living their life in misery.
Please share this with everyone you know.
